The sky lowered and the long winter wait ended
First flakes were small – we held our breath
The construction team hurried though the crusty dirt cavern that stretched beyond the window to my left, covering equipment.
Are the roads treacherous?
Will there be school tomorrow?
What about the last meeting today?
Country roads already coated in a thin layer of swirling white
Each cautious car in the long line that stretched in front and behind me heading home
By sunset, the hill in front was preparing itself for a day of sledding and snowball fights
The phone rang- and teenagers squealed in delight as they listened the the automated message that began with , “Due to inclement weather…”
Finally- snow and a day to play.
