For the third time in less than a week, I had the great pleasure to sit and listen to published authors speak. It was a wonderful way to spend an hour on a Sunday afternoon. At 1:30 I met up with two of my students and we went to “An Afternoon with Lois Lowry and Kathryn Erskine. There they sat, on the stage, in two comfy chairs, having a conversation, and we all got to listen in. It was wonderful. Kathryn’s questions were terrific. Lois’s answers were so interesting. Did you know she is a photographer and her photographs are on the covers of both Number the Stars and The Giver? Did you know she was a contestant on Jeopardy and she watches Jeopardy every night? Did you know she has a cat and a dog and she has to shut her cat out of the room in which she writes every day because the cat thinks her computer mouse is a real mouse? I walked away from the hour liking Lois Lowry even more than before. Perhaps my favorite part of all of these recent author encounters is that they talk so candidly about the writing process, and the message is so energizing.
